XING Wins an EMMY!

So, Its been a very long time since I have put anything up here. What can I say, life gets very busy when you are working on TRON: Legacy. Thanks to my wonderful wife and two boys, I am able to make it through each day, week, month, year!

So, my senior film, slash project, slash short CG film from BYU Animation just was awarded a student Emmy, and so I thought I would say congrats to everyone who helped on that film! What an accomplishment. Here is a link to the news article:

Figure Drawing

So every Wed. night at Digital Domain, we have a live figure drawing session that is open to the artists here. Its been a while since I have actively drawn in a setting like that, so i decided to take advantage of an opportunity like that. here are some of the drawings that I produced from last nights session. it is so nice to draw again, and not so nice to feel how rusty I am after all my training. I guess thats how it goes when you forget to exercise your skills: they go rusty on ya! Thanks for taking a peek. Ciao!

All of the renders you see below are shots that I have lit and are passed off. Don't get too alarmed that one of the characters is white. What you see here is not the final composite. The final composite will have ghosty FX on the white character. Hopefully that final look will be able to show soon. So stay tuned!

Color is not just value

So I was watching a video about color today. In it I was taught that color should not just be thought about in terms of value only. But colors are defined in real life by their temperature. Further, for example, as colors loose value, they actually gain in saturation. And the opposite is true: as a color gains in value, it looses in saturation. Its a fun concept. So, I tried it out in a very quick and dirty painting. I stayed mostly within the red to yellow palette. But I tried to apply this new knowledge about color. It has really opened my mind to a greater understanding of the relationship that color & light share together. Enjoy this one!

X-ing Color Scripts

So, originally, we had decided to include 5 color changes in our senior film. The purpose of that was to coordinate the mood of the story with lighting. But, it turns out, after Pixar's visit this week, we have changed things. We have eliminated the scripts down to three light rigs. And since I will be the one that is putting the light rigs together, this works out for the better anyways. So, on to the reason for this post: With the new changes, Brian Kohrman (our Art Lead), Worth Dayley and I sat down for about an hour and revised the color scripts to match the new suggested lighting scheme of 3 rigs instead of 5. What I am showing here are the revised color scripts. I will show of the 3 that I did that represent the 3 light rigs, and I will also show up Worth's script that he did that is also useful in trasnsitions for reference to light and color in our film.

The ones that I did are the first, third and last image you see here. The beginning and the end of the film will follow after the first color script you see. There might be some tweaking of values and saturation at the beginning of the film. But those changes will not be evident in the light rig itself. We plan to do those tweaks in post. The second image you see is the one that Worth did. We needed to make sure to have a solid reference for how colors and light will look like when the sun goes behind the cloud. This is an important story element that needs to parallel very closely in the lighting schemes. Enjoy!

So, me and another guy are working on doing some color scripts for our senior film. We are still in the brain storming stage where we are trying to figure out how color and light will work in the transitions for the story. These are my first attempt at the first part of the beginning sequence. This has been a great exercise for me. Color is difficult. Enjoy this!

Celulo-keet

So, last week we did a drawing session on exaggerating a bird. None of us were really that successful with it. So, we revisited it today. I found an image of a bird called a budgie; its kind of like a fat parakeet. This is what I came up with, I like to call him "Celulo-keet", actually I have to give credit to my boss Rob for the name. he came up with it. Anyways, enjoy!

15 Minute Study

So, i took a break today for 15 minutes, and tried to paint a picture I found on Getty Images that inspired me. Now that this painting is all done, I would have done some things different. These sessions always teach me something new that pushes me to a new and different territory. I believe that the best way to learn how to paint is to paint. I have a long way to go.

Bird

So, we wanted to go for an exaggeration today on birds. I want to be honest, I had a hard time doing that in the actual drawing. I did not plan enough ahead in deciding what to exaggerate, and in what style to do it in. This started out as an "easy" quick draw session, until I started drawing, then it got really difficult. One Color Painting

So, today's subject was Geisha. But we wanted to paint in a style where we could only use one color, but change on its saturation and value. I really tried to push myself to go for the real-look on this painting. I had a ton of fun doing this. I hope you enjoy it!

Fun Emulation

So, for our drawing session today, we decided to draw after the style of Heidi Smith. Our subject for this emulation exercise was Mythological Figures. i chose to do Apollo. This turned out to be quite the exercise, it really pushed me to draw outside of my comfort zone-style.

Tribute to the Olympics

Well, we decided to do an Olympics-themed drawing session this morning. I really wanted to draw the winner of the 200 meter sprint from last night, (mr. Bolt) but I decided instead I would draw this. I had a blast drawing this guy, he is way caricatured from the original photo, and that was a nice exercise for me to go through. Go Olympics!

Value Study

The topic for the quick draw today was a value study on clouds. This really pushed me to think value, value, value. I always got in a rut with my drawings and paintings where i would noodle around too much trying to get the perfect shape and outline of whatever it was i was drawing. But today, i took a bold step in my growth as a painter, to not draw anything. i went straight to painting. I loved this study. i will do it again. I hope you have enjoyed this as much as I did.

So, the hunter design is 'for reals', we will probably be using it for a project at work; but the monkey design was just for some fun. After what seemed like a very long day, i needed something that put a smile on my face and made me laugh. I hope it makes you laugh too.

Sandstone

I was in the mood to try to paint some rocks. I learned a ton about rocks in this painting, and that they take a certain amount of patience to paint. They are also really hard because rocks are made up of planes and lights adjacent to darks to make those planes. Essentially, rocks are just shapes within shapes, and that can be a lot harder than it looks to replicate. N'joy!

So, at work we have been given a new project that we can work on about monkeys and gravity. Before I could get into the actual character designs for the monkeys, i thought that i would draw out some more "true to life" kind of sketches. Though they are not really "real" looking, i learned a lot about monkeys shapes, sizes, proportions and how they carry their weight. it was also an important exercise to to figure out how to draw the face with the most simplicity. So, the quick draw topic today was a still life. Though this painting took more than the alloted 30 minutes for the session, (it really took like 45 minutes), I learned a lot. I thought I would explore into some other brushes in Photshop. Enjoy!

Revamp

So, as we were looking at some of the shots in KITES, we noticed that some of the lighting needed to be tweaked to add consistency. We also decided to add a "gradient" to the buildings to add a level of depth to them. You will notice that I posted this shot a few posts ago, thinking it was already done. However, after careful consideration, we revamped it. Here are the changes! Enjoy!

Horray for these quick draw sessions! Today was Stacey's turn to come up with our topic. Today it was monster appliances! What a fun idea. So, i chose to do a monster vacuum cleaner. I figured that if a vacuum cleaner really became a monster, he would always be on the prowl for dust, dirt, food crumbs, toenail clippings and anything else on the floor in the house. What else can a vacuum eat? I also figured that their hose would become like a venomous snake, ready to strike any moving dust! Watch out for the drool! Enjoy.

So, my background in art is actually acrylic, oils, and watercolor painting. It has been several years since I have had the opportunity to paint on canvas. I really do miss it. I was inspired today to try out digital painting on the subject of clouds. So for our final in Character Design, we had to come up with four characters: a hero, a villain, a comic sidekick and one other character of our choosing. Then we had to create a story for those four characters to live in; as well, we had to come up with an environment for the characters to exist in. This is what I came up with. Enjoy!
